insufficient memory message on galaxy s2

Can someone please help before i lynch my husband.
he has a galaxy s2 and has an sd card too. for ages he had the message about insufficient storage so went and bought an sd card however it still says there is not enough even though he has plenty. i have the same phone and a hell of a lot more apps than him but mine is fine.

Try going into app manager and pick an app and see if there's an option to move it to the sd card - some apps can be moved, some not. The insufficient storage message probably relates to the internal phone storage, rather than the SD card?
Does he have lots of film clips and/or music stored on the phone? Again, try moving these to the SD card too.
There are 'cleaning' apps which some may say are a waste of time, but I use 'clean master' to remove junk - a bit like the 'disk cleanup' function in Windows.
  • Android treats internal and external memory as 2 separate pots so lots of one type won't compensate for too little of the other. Your husband will need to manually copy stuff from the internal memory over to the memory card and/or remove apps to restore harmony.
  • He has moved as much as he can to his sd card, which isnt that much tbh and most of the stuff he has says it cant be moved. he doesnt have an excessive amount of much at all. in storage settings it says he has plenty but when you go into applications mananger he has got hardly anything. i think its a fault with the phone as i have got exactly the same phone with much more on it than him yet ihave got lots still available. very strange.

It's not a fault with the phone.

Does he use his phone for emails & texts?
Does he delete them out of trash when he's done with them?
Does he have many photos/videos on there?
    Does he keep his voicemails?
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

Exactly how much internal storage does he have when he looks in the application manager? He needs at least 25mb, but 30 is better.

Get him to go through every app using the application manager, delete data when he can, move to SD card when he can (and make sure that apps are set up to install onto SD card), and remove updates on any that he doesn't use but can't be removed. Deleting updates on Google+ and Touchpal made a huge difference to my phone. (And then make sure that apps aren't set to automatically update or they will all just come straight back again!)
  • right-we have tried everything bar chucking him and his phone thru the window. after many lengthy phonecalls to vodafone they have referred him to samsung directly so he is off to the service centre now to hopefully get it sorted.
thank you everyone for your help, will let you know if he gets it sorted.

This is the really significant bit.

OP, uninstall the most recent update to Google Hangouts and you problem will go away.
  • Remember to move your own files off the local storage and put it on the memory card - things like music, videos, photos etc.

Often quite hard to do this one mobiles - which is why many no longer offer the option of SD slots on their phones.

Factory reset wouldn't hurt, by the way.
  • weellll after the visit to the repair centre all is calm in the house of carebear. when it was plugged in it came up with error after error, after back up and reset it did it again so another reset and all is ok. thank god. no more whingeing. thank to you all for your help and advice.
