Why are we building flats for foreigners?

More social housing does need to be built but why are they overpriced? Overpriced to you, to me, to everyone in London?
I could build a 3 bedroom semi tomorrow for under £90k and building volume would bring the cost down even lower .
The problem is Chucky developers will NEVER increase the number of houses they build each year (which is what the Government wants) because if they did prices would fall and more importantly to them their profit margins.. The developers have the upper hand in this and weak governments will not address the issue.
The land banking thats been going on for the past 15-20 years has been for a reason and that is to restrict supply.0 -

Oh goody a race to the bottom, just what we need. The "free market" is being manipulated by developers (restricting supply) and the Conservatives by introducing Help to buy Schemes.
Who stands to gain the most? Governments in the pockets of developers or your average man/woman in the street who works their socks off just to stay warm and dry. The gap between the haves and have nots is growing wider with each year that passes and some on here seem to tar all "have nots" as some undeserving underclass.0 -

But this is not just about buying Chucky, rents are soaring for many.
People will alway aspire to own their own home, for many it won't be possible and I don't have a problem with that, life isn't perfect but at the very least people should be able to expect to rent a property with a decent contract length for affordable rent and still have a life.0 -

They never have and never will. Only volume social housing will make up the difference. How many cleaners, bus conductors and shop workers were able to buy property before Right to Buy 25-30 years ago?
No doubt a number made sacrifices and did - I know a few who did on comparable wages but probably the minority. Hence the need for volume social house building if people are going to be housed in anything other than multi occupancy house shares, garages and sheds."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... That's what happens in a market place people buy or rent what is within their price bracket.leveller2911 wrote: »But this is not just about buying Chucky, rents are soaring for many.

I don't really see this as any different to the properties in Spain marketed solely at Brits.
However, it does suggest problems in the capital, as the reason for marketing elsewhere is you find a buyer easier. Same thing happened in some parts of spain where the locals ended up completely priced out.
It's certainly not a good thing for the local aera or economy.....as Spain found out.0 -
Channel 4 has just reported that there are flats being built in places like Stratford, London that are being marketed off plan first to moderately rich people living in countries like Malaysia.......
First I've heard of this, but I must say the whole thing's brilliant. At last a company finding a new export market, with high-ticket goods.
All that money falling into UK, and any 'risk' in the investment falling to Malaysia. A pure masterstroke. If this takes up in a big way, we can eliminate our stifling negative balance of trade in no time.
All those dinasaurs or luddites who object to this should spend their time moaning about all the Left Hand Drive Jags made in this country and... er... god forbid... offered only to foreigners.
Galliard Homes are surely in line for the Queen's award for Enterprise!
If we can't solve our financial problems purely by selling flats, then how about we try selling London Bridge to the Americans again. Or Piccadilly to the Chinese, Windsor Castle to Indonesia, and Anglesey might be a nice strategic base for the Russians if we could sell it to them. Plenty of room in Wales for the residents to move out.
This is such good news, I can only believe Boris has his golden hands in it somewhere.....
Well done Boris!

Or not.
If this took off in a big way it would just mean an evern higher benefit bill, and that's already rising at it's fastest rate on record. Apparently, if it stays on the trend it's on, housing benefit alone will eat up the entire income tax take today in approx 20 years time (according to the beeb)0
