Firstly let me be clear that I fully accept that I'm the one who screwed up here and missed the payment which I normally send by bank transfer.
I'm sure I haven't recieved last month's statement and it slipped my mind - I suddenly realised on the 18th Sep that I hadn't made a payment this month so I sent one by bank transfer.
This month's statement came through and it looks like I should have paid by the 14th Sep and they've whacked a £12 charge on the account.
I don't suppose theres any avenue to ask them to refund the charge as a good will gesture? I've got a year of on-time payments under my belt.
And I'll set up a standing order so I don't have this problem again.
PS guidance on the MSE site seems to be more about charges incurred for going over the limit which I haven't.

You can call them and plead ignorance/whatever and apologetically ask them if they'll refund the fee, if you haven't done it before they may well do.
DO NOT set up a standing order! Get them to set up a direct debit - a standing order sends the payment on a fixed date, if your statement date changes for whatever reason (and they do vary from time to time with some card cos) then there's a risk the SO may not make it in time for the due date - this will be your fault, not theirs! With a DD, it's their problem if they don't collect it (unless you don't have the £ in the bank, of course).

Good point about the Direct Debit thanks, and yes I've never missed a payment before on anything ever - I'm kicking myself!!0

I'd ring them and see if they'll refund the fee I'm sure I've had that happen before.0

Phew all sorted - £12 refunded and direct debit for the minimum set up each month (and I'll make top up payments via bank transfer)0

Do check which way your CC operates.
Some cards will cancel the DD if they receive a payment larger than the minimum. Other cards will take the minimum regardless of any previous payments.
People have come a cropper either way.0
