Camcorder to iMac problem

I think I know the answer to this but......
I have a Panasonic NV-GS300 mini DV (tape) camcorder. I used to take a fair amount of video and never had any issue uploading the camcorder footage to the iMac.
Connect the camcorder in playback mode and use iMovie to import the video for editing etc.
I haven't done this for a while but yesterday I used the camcorder and iMovie simply won't see it.
I suspect that the problem is that I've upgraded iMovie to version 11 since I last did this and support for my camcorder has been dropped, it is an old camera though perfectly usable. I can see all my old video projects in iMovie 11 but it refuses to play with the camcorder.
In the end I used one of my Linux boxes to do the job but was wondering if there's any way to fix it so I can do it on the Mac?
I'm reluctant to buy a new camcorder as I simply don't use one enough these days to warrant the expense.

Sorted.
It wasn't iMovie that was the problem. I was trying to use a USB cable because it was close to hand.
After digging out the Firewire cable it all worked perfectly.
Windows Movie Maker is happy with either Firewire or USB, I was confusing my memory of what I did on which platform. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0
