Carriage for non delivery

I ordered some goods from Premier Healthcare and Hygiene. I went away abroad for a few days. When I returned 2 cards were through my door from ipost parcels saying they had tried to deliver and PTO to manage your delivery. I could not have re delivered or chose pick up as goods had been returned to Premier Healthcare (all within 5 days). I emailed them - they would resend if they charged me again for postage, or I could have a credit but they would deduct postage. MD got involved and he was unwilling to refund and was completely unhelpful.
I was only away 5 days. They did not stipulate anywhere in their terms that they would only try to deliver twice in a 5 day period and then after that goods would be returned. They even say in their terms time is not of the essence.
If I have ordered the goods and paid for them and carriage, surely I have the right to receive them?
I order many goods online and every other time if I am not at home I can pick up from the post office, or the local depot of whichever delivery company tried to deliver. Surely they cannot have such a tight timescale before they have the goods returned to themselves.
The size of the postage is not very large, it is simply the principal I want to challenge - any thoughts anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

I do agree that 5 days is a very short span of time to leave it before returning the goods to the sender. However, you ordered the goods...they (attempted to) deliver the goods. They did kind of fulfill their end of the deal, it just so happened you ordered them and then left the country. I'm not sure they have to refund postage, it wasn't their fault you weren't there.First home purchased 09/08/2013
