EDF - Incorrect tariff for the last year!

Last Oct I changed over to EDF's Blue + Price Promise tariff. I was with them before on one of their other tariffs. Just checked my last bill from May to get an idea of usage for comparison as I'm checking out whether I need to change my supplier.

Anyway, I happened to notice that while my gas said I was on the new tariff, my electricity section said I was on the standard variable economy 7 tariff. The tariff details on the bill are tucked away there in pretty small writing and I guess I just hadn't noticed when I've checked my bill before. I checked the previous bill from dec and it said the same.

Gave them a call and sure enough, I have been paying over the odds for my electricity since the change to the new tariff last Oct to the tune of about 2p per Kwh. Over about 4,600 kwh that adds up! I also don't have economy 7 so I was paying even more for an E7 standard variable day rate!

They didn't really offer any explanation other than there was a problem with the change over for the electricity tariff! Still, I should be getting a refund next week.

Guess this is just a bit of a warning to everyone to check the finer details of their bills and make sure they are on the tariff they think they are on. On the EDF bill the tariff is written in pretty tiny writing near the top of the table detailing the energy you have used.

  • did they say how much refund you would be getting? make sure you do the maths and work out how much you expect to get back compared to the refund they mentioned
  • She didn't say as they will need to roll back my bill to when I started on the Blue+ tariff nd re-bill me with the correct rates. The standing charge day rate is 4p per day more on the Blue + tariff but that is only about £8 extra I haven't paid over the time period.

I intend to sit down and do the calc though to make sure they don't fleece me with the refund.

OK, no E7. But do you have an E7 meter (dual rate)? If so the system will default it to E7 rates based on the serial number, unless its overridden.
Shame that you missed this on all your bills since 10/12. The tariff is also displayed online in 'My Account'.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

We do have an old E7 meter so I guess that explains the default rate chosen. I did query this with her actually and they are going to come out and replace it.

Also, the home page for "My Account" shows Blue + Price promise in the summary. Doesn't mention the standard variable rate there. It's only when I examined the bill that I noticed the error for my electricity.
