123-reg took payment without permission.

http://www.123-reg.co.uk/

Years ago I created a domain name with them. I only re-newed it once and that was that.

I had been getting emails from them to re-new it again. Then all of a sudden today they take £8+ from my paypal account without my permission.

According to my account I have no domains and also in payment information it says I have not provided a paypal address.

I have raised a ticket about this but am very annoyed as I did not agree to any re-newal and there doesn't seem to even be a domain in existence on my account any more as well so they've taken payment for absolutely nothing.

  • Did you have the Automatic Renewal option ticked in your account settings?

I've never used 123-reg for web domains, so don't know their account pages' layout. It seems many registrars enable this option for you by default - there are other threads on here about other registrars doing the same, although I seem to recall it being against Nominet guidelines.
  • Nope. Never had auto-renewal. What is nominet?

  • That's all well and good but I just want a brief explanation? Do they monitor all domain name sellers or something?

So why not click on one of the links that the Google search brings up, such as the wikipedia entry or Nominet's own website, and find out for yourself what they do?
  • I have found this term in the following document:
3.1 123-reg will endeavour to automatically renew domain names when they are due for renewal subject to the following:

3.1.1 You have up to date and valid payment details stored and
3.1.2 You have selected through your Control Panel prior to payment date that you do not wish for 123-reg to automatically renew the domains.

If you read if carefully, it says that by selecting "you do not wish [...] to automatically renew", they will try to automatically renew. It's obviously a mistake in their terms, which should be corrected.

companies like 123-reg are basically like 3rd party companies, and they all go via nominet to register uk domains

Because I want a brief simple explanation, not a dossier on it!

Is it against the forum rules to ask questions now? Certainly seems like it the way some people are going on.

By googling it and reading you'd have had an answe hours ago. Worth it for the minimal effort.

How is reading 3 lines of text (the summary on Wikipedia) a dossier?
  • Next time I won't bother asking a question on the forum since y'all worship google so much. In fact, we should petition Martin to make it against the rules to ask questions on the forum since everything is google-able anyway.

    Happy?
