I have the 250 overdraft, but after a very expensive year, i'm usually up to the hilt by the end of the month.

Hang on, something doesn't add up here. If you have a £250 overdraft then you should not be getting charged anything at all for being only £2 overdrawn.

I'm afraid that I now doubt the veracity of your opening statement...

The OP probably meant he went £2 over the arranged overdraft. See post at 12:26.

I'd assume £2 over that limit.

Many people think limits are an aspirational target to exceed.

I prefer to see credit limits / overdraft limits as things to get nowhere near.

This. I don't think I've ever had a free overdraft and not used it.

I appreciate coming on this website to learn just how rare a thing it is to be 'bad with money'. ;)

As others have said, talk to First Direct. Also, clarify what the charges are for.

Like HSBC, they have a number of situations where they do/should not charge fees (see page 9 of this) including if you exceed the arranged overdraft by less than £10 or if the charges make you overdrawn.

Only ever been hit by overdraft fees once (and got those fees refunded), now I consider I have a buffer of £100 and an emergency fund of £250. So if my account even goes below £100 I consider that I'm in debt and can't afford anything that isn't absolutely essential.

For sure FD would have told you what charges you were going to incur and when, so it was up to you to ensure you had those funds available on that date and knew that if you didn't, you would face further charges.

You say you've been stung "yet again" so you must have been aware of when the charge would have debited ? As others have said, you always receive pre notification of any charges so the best thing to do is make sure that the money is in the account to cover the charge.

I do agree that going over your limit by just £2 is a little careless.
