mounting tv on plasterboard

Hi All,
I want to mount my new smart tv on the wall. it weights around 6kg and it quite light compared to old 32 inch TVs.
I know you have wooden studs on plasterboard so have knocked on the wall to find them and the stud is approximately 10cm in length whereas my tv as around 19 to 20cm in legnth ( the back of the tv where the bracket is mounted on the tv ).
this means I have to drill a whole through the wood and one through the plaster board .
am i right ? would the plaster board take the weight ?
what type of holding screw stud( if that is the correct name ) should I use?
Also anyone has a recomendation on how I can make sure I am not drilling a hole through my electricity cable ? the power sockets are just below where I want to mount the tv so nut sure if that means the cables are also going up straight through the stud
finally, if it is a wooden stud, can I double check and find the studs using magnets as some people suggest ?

I didn't think magnets stuck to wood.0 -
It doesn't answer all your questions, but if you buy/borrow a decent quality electronic stud finding tool this will help you to find exactly where the studs are and you can also use it to check for cables and pipes buried in the wall.0

Ah, but the plasterboard is held to the studs with metal screws or nails ;-)0 -
exactly the nails else magnet will not stick to wood
I am thinking of getting this

my situation is , my studs are 10 by 10 or 11 by 11 so sort of square but the tv mount space between nuts is around 20mm or so so I am thinking of either taking the risk and mounting one screw into the wall and the other into the stud or get mdf wood and then mount it on top
this means first mounting the mdf to the wall using few more screws.
my tv is very light only around 5 to 6 kg so swivel tilt in here should be ok

although it says upto 28inch and 20kg but mine is 32 inch but only 5 kg so should be ok0 -

I would use the mdf and a bunch of screws into the baton and a couple of plasterboard rawl plugs as well for good measure. For the sake of £5 worth of materials you know the TV isn't going to fall down.0

Mine is a new build so the walls are made of hardened pastry held together with spit. I had a 50inch on the wall, I just used a decent number of heavy duty anchor bolts to hold the bracket on the wall.0
