restuff leather sette

My settee is about 13 years old but is basically ok other than that it needs more stuffing in the cushions. Trouble is it is all put together so you cant remove anything. I rang 2 upholsterers up and they said that they couldn't do it but when I first got the settees I rang up the company I got them from (cant remember where now ? DFS or similar) and told them it wasn't very padded and they sent a guy out to do it and he had some kind of 'key' which dismantled the whole thing and he restuffed it so I know it can be done.

Can anyone offer any advice please? Many thanks :)

  • ...just rang DFS and they say they don't provide such a service, I wouldn't go back again as its not cost effective when something can be mended, not sure what to do now...

  • I think they reckon on a customer changeing sofas ever 6/7 yrs, so its not in theire interest to have stuff last longer.
My sofas from Natuzzi are about 13 yrs old, one seat area is a bit flat , and a furniture expert from J Lewis told me how to take it apart to re fill with foam. He was in my home to inspect another item and kindly advised me.
Maybe you need a 3rd opinion, did the 2 upholsterers actually examine it?
  • thanks for replying, no they didn't come round just advice over the phone. Maybe I'll keep trying and see if I can get another person in to do it then :)

Are they loose cushions are do you mean the cushioning on the arms etc?

In either case it is hard to see why they can't be opened up and refilled with foam, although that is easier with loose cushions.

We had the foam in the loose cushions on a suite replaced some years ago and were very happy with the result.

Google for more upholsterers in your area. You should be able to find someone who can do the work at a sensible price.

Enquire at small local fabric shops or furniture shops.
  • Turn the sofa over and have a look underneath. If it's like ours it will have just a dust cover. Remove that and you will have access to the inside. Buy some new upholstery foam (Fleabay ?) and get stuffing ! I did ours a few years ago easy peasy ! Plenty of upholstery suppliers on the web. Why not search you tube for help !

  • You are not alone with this. I used to be an upholsterer sounds like you have "fixed seating" this is very common with leather sofas and chairs. The fillings in the seats can be replaced which is the good news. However it is a job that a qualified upholsterer ideally needs to do. There is a lot of work to do in undoing staples before you can actually reach the cushions. The seats are fixed before the sides and the outside back so the dust cover underneath the sofa needs to be removed (staples) then the outside back and sides of the sofa need to have the staples removed from the bottom of the sofa. There are also staples from the back of the seating (inside the sofa) that need to be removed to actually get to the seat fillings. It is a complicated job for an unqualified person to do. The tools used by an upholsterer make the job easier too! That said it is certainly cheaper to have the job done with good quality foam than to go and buy a new sofa!!!! It should take an upholsterer about 2 - 3 hrs to do. Hope this helps. I no longer do upholstery jobs, but I do offer a replacement sofa cushion service online, I use quality high density foam cut to size for anyone looking to get their chair or sofa looking and feeling like new again. Have been trading for over 15 years. If you need any further advice I am only too happy to help at Comfort Solutions
