Tablet for a 4 year old?

Hi yet another kids tablet thread, i want to get my daughter a tablet for xmas, i'm leaning towards a samsung nexus or a kindle fire. Last year we bought her an INNOTAB pretty much a waste of money, no charger and games all have to be paid for so very expensive to run.

i know there are other kids orientated tablets like the Kurio and Nabi but spec wise they look over priced and under powered.

Does anyone have any advice?

There was something on Breakfast Tv yesterday that Tesco have just announced their own tablet to rival the Ipad but with a saving of up to 70%. I was only half listening can't remember all the details.

  • My not-yet 3 year old is currently watching videos of herself on my ipad.

However, that's MY ipad. She just has most of the memory for her TV progs and apps. :rotfl:

I had to re-read your title. No way would I be buying a tablet for a 14 year old, never mind a 4 year old!!!

Nobody could ever draw that picture with a etch-a-sketch. It took you forever to draw a house.

My 2 year old is currently doing a jigsaw on my iPad! I tried him with the Innotab but he wasn't interested so I've got myself a mini at least that way I can set the old one up just with his apps and I'm not having him skype my friends or updating my facebook!

I cannot recommend these enough, got one for our 4 year old last Christmas they are really a Nexus 7 with some serious added protection, they have 2 modes a kiddi mode which is easy to use and very child friendly and then the mommy or daddy mode which turns it into a regular tablet.

Ours has been punished and I mean punished and it takes its daily pounding with no issues at all it has been dropped, thrown had things dropped on it, fell out of the car been sat on, I tell you they are as tough as old boots but bang up to date, you cannot ask for more.

£149 everywhere and they have great after sales service as well. But it from Argos or Amazon for faultless customer service should anything go wrong. Trust me I looked into every kiddies tablet last year and they majority are toys with crappy software, this is powerful and runs even the most demanding apps and games yet tough, you will not get better.

I do not work for them but cannot speak highly enough about this bit of kit. 1 thing to note, it has its own Nabi market where there is a good selection of free and paid apps, google play will not work on it out of the box however amazon market place will, I source my .apk install files from all over the place and have not found any of the up t the minute games it will not run, it can be a challenge not have the play store but generally most things are available else where.

If you are techy minded then you can flash Jellybean 4.3 to it if you wish and then use the play store as normal, I have not done this yet as the Nabi interface is fantastic for my little one to use, maybe next year I will flash the latest version of android to it for her but at the moment there is no need.

    HTH and good luck

+1 for don't bother. At four they aren't bothered. A load of pens and paper, pretend post office, would be much more fun and a lot cheaper.
  • Ok ..not relevant but when I was 4 i wasn't allowed junior aspirin , all we had was a ball a bat a coal house some earth and some worms, carrots and other natural bits and pieces. I am totally gobsmacked that the bbc is advertising the CBeebies' app with what could only be as a 2-3 year old , totally eff ing waste of the license payers money not withstanding the subliminal advertising that is going on there. If you really want to worry about what tablet for your four year old I would suggest that it is bolting the stable door before the horse got away. The tablet you needed was a birth control pill about 5 years ago. Talk to the kid, and make sure the other half talks to the kid, spend time with he/her !!!!!! advice from this forum is free , so take my free advice look after your child and let them break your tablet or phone or iPad, and take them out, let them fall over, get a graze or two, eat worms, coal if they can find any, give them a book and read it to them. This a techie forum so why am I telling you to bring up your kids. When I was a 4 year old the only tablet was the one Moses carried and he had a choice of 10.
Go to the forum for childcare and ask there if my advice offends
