We have the same problem, our flat is about fifty yards from the train track and most weekend nights during the summer there's some kind of work going on. Always seems like it's just next to us lol  We've never had any kind of notification ... I agree the noise is unpleasant and annoying, but there's not really a lot you can do, the tracks have to be maintained and Network rail can't really inform everyone who lives alongside the tracks.

The various companies aren't too bad to deal with though. We called up and asked why there were so many train horns being sounded (it went from none to over a hundred a day, and lasted for over a month). It turned out that the horns have to be sounded when there are repairs being done, but they'd forgotten to take the signs down. The horns decreased dramatically as soon as we rang :) Although we now get loads of leaflets posted to us with titles like 'Train Horns and You' ...

Hi Alexandria, welcome to MSE. Please don't let some of the reponses on here put you off, its a great site & can save you loads of money. Have a look around at other forums.

Yeah, network rail are the people you want. Its not unreasonable to expect a bit of neighbourly courtesy, though they may say they put notices on their webpage & at stations advising of the works.

Personally, I don't buy the arguement because you live next to a railway line you've got to expect it. I live next to a road, but that doesn't that mean its OK for people to dig it up at 2am? (emergencies excepted).

However, not sure what end result you're hoping for. Suppose they might add you to a mailing list to pre-warn you of such works in the future?

Thanks for the replies. I just really wanted to know why no warning as the daytime works we have been notified of (and as my youngest was 2 months old at the time that was helpful!!) and it seems more important to warn people during the night than day iyswim?
Anyway they are going to look into it and thats enough by me, its just about making them consider the impact they have.
Oh and glad I am not the only one to think the aliens had come, my DH was in hysterics laughing at me!

You think they should write to everyone who lives near every railway line to inform them of maintence work???

If you don't like the noise of trains and railway maintence work, don't live next to a railway line...

not always as easy as that if its all you can afford.

its common curtosy to inform residents anyways. its not like they are asking for permission either.

I had a problem with a company making a Humming noise in my neighbourhood, the noise eminated from an extractor fan and you could here it louder at night when other noises diminished in the surrounding area.
My wife and I became tuned into this noise and it was difficult to sleep.
We reported it to the factory and their Director said I had to accept that living near industry--'well you have to expect and accept it'.
Well, Unfortunately for his company the council DON'T ACCEPT noise, their view is 'any noise is nuisance noise'.
After monitoring the sound with instruments provided by the council--the noise STOPPED, due to the enforcement order placed on them.
It all came down to money! New motor required, fitted, NO NOISE!

Good for you! People are too ready to accept what they are told as gospel. There is too much noise pollution in the world as it is.

A bit of warning would be nice regarding the work being done on the train tracks but that would cost money,

OP, please ignore the unhelpful and inconsiderate people who are telling you to just live with it...

Thats easy for them to say when they don't have to live with it...

No one is saying they shouldn't fix the railways, but they might not even realise they are bothering people. Contact network rail and let them know of the problems...

    Good luck!

they are replacing the metrolink tracks in manchester and they have agreed not to do any heavy work at night beyond the times the trams normally run, as a curtacy (sp?) to local residents, so why do network rail have to work at night?
funnily enough they are using the same machine and i thought my house was being attacked and we live 1/2 a mile from the track!!
