Removal Costs

Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas of the ballpark cost of a removal firm to move us 20 miles. We are an average 3 bed semi with average furniture.
Had a quote for £980 all in,but that seems steep to me. We will be doing all the packing ourselves, just them to load, drive, unload.

Cheers,
WTL

  • We recently used a local firm to move about 8 miles or so and it cost £200. We packed and unpacked- they loaded the van, drove, unloaded into the proper rooms at the new house (inc upstairs) and did it all amazingly fast.

We were moving from a 2 bed flat (with easily enough furniture for a 3 bed!).

I would definitely get some more quotes- if nothing else to see if the £980 is reasonable for your situation.
  • OP, where are you in the country, then we can advise you a bit better.

Where about's are you? We paid £800 to pack, Move and Unload a 2 bed bungalow. We had quotes from £800 to £1500, so it pays to phone around a few firms., some national and some local.
  • We have just had 3 quotes for packing and removals for a 3-bed semi, moving 10 miles. 2 adults, 2 children. Midweek move.

    £567 removals + £119 packing
    £486 removals + £168 packing
£823 including packing and unpacking at new house.

all BAR registered and found on site https://www.bar.co.uk and including insurance.

If you have a facebook account there are a lot of people who advertise house moves. I found they were a lot cheaper than actual removal firms.

I used someone from FB, packed all items myself. They provided insurance, suite covers, blankets to cover furniture. Lifted all items onto the van and deposited items into designated rooms. Moved 20miles at a cost of £175.

I moved from a 3 bed house last summer to less than 2 miles down the road. Cost me around £700 with me doing all the packing, supplying my own boxes etc. Added an extra £30 on top as a tip for the 3 removal men.

When removal companies work out a fee, you need to check whether they have allowed time for possible delays in completion if it's a house sale/purchase. Some companies have an extra charge per hour if move is longer than anticipated time. Others don't have any additional fee no matter how long the whole move takes.

This is the very reason I've used the same company for my last 2 moves. I like the comfort of knowing I'm not going to be hit with a big overtime bill if delays occur & that the men will work like trojans to get your stuff in no matter if it's way past their normal expected knocking off time.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • Has anyone used the services from any companies advertising their removal services on Anyvan.com?

£900 to move 20 miles this year. They packed. Brentwood to Chingford. Would have been around £600 without the packing I think. 4 bed to a 3 bed house.

Btw, unless your property is particularly minimalistic, the packing is worth every penny!

www.bar.co.uk is a very good place to start.

Rates vary drastically between different areas of the country. They also vary according to how busy particular periods are.

Your quote could be cheap, it could be expensive. Without knowing the type of property, access details, diss/reassembly, box count, type of furniture, ease of access and numerous other details it is impossible to know.

    The first question anyone should ask;

What do you think reasonable for moving between 4 & 8 metric tonnes of furniture and personal effects across anywhere between 2 & 4 miles on foot?

How much would you like to be paid?

Whatever the answer is, 'x' it by 3 (number of crew) and then double it to add on the VAT, taxes and costs of running a professional business.

Then see what your opinion is.

OP: Check out the cost calculator on the BAR website, if you fill the info in properly then its pretty darn accurate - it also allows for the geographical differences.
I work in the 'moving industry'. My frame of reference is around 20 years and circa 27,000 domestic moves.
