    Anyhow, as everyone seems to feel I'll get nowhere w/ my bank/mastercard, can anyone recommend the cheapest way to transfer money to my friend to pay the admittedly exorbitant phone charges from AT&T. I've seen Azimo online and MSE recommends TransferWise. I guess there is the PO but exchange rate is 1.14 !

    Next time take the MasterCard toll free number down before you go, they will connect you for free to Lloyds in the UK, all the number are on https://www.mastercard.com

    I'd also take a back up card as others suggest, in the US amex are pretty good.

    I regularly use Transferwise :)

    There was a happy ending to the saga. I wrote to LloydsTSB customer services and highlighted my experience and what financial consequences I suffered due to their blocking the card. They investigated and decided to refund me in full for the costs I incurred (£90) plus added in another £50 for my trouble. Happy bunny now.
