E111 travel insurance??????

Going to Turkey and looking for travel insurance when i was told about an E111 Travel Insurance form you can get at your main post office for free.

can anyone tell me if they use this form along with seperate insurance cover?

Or will the E111 suffice on its own?

have a look at this link, E111 has been replaced with EHIC which you can apply for online. It really only covers emergency health things. For peace o f mind I'd take out insurance as well

Turkey is not a member of the EEA therefore the old E111 (now know as European Health Insurance Card - EHIC) will not be valid.

Last year my son fell very ill on a trip to China. He spent 5 weeks in hospital, and I flew out to join him, for a month. Everything, including a 6 hour journey by air ambulance from China to Bangkok (this alone probably cost about £20,000), paid for by the insurers.

Don't ever, ever skimp on travel insurance!!

If you are planning more than one trip this year, an annual policy may be good for you.

E111 will cover you for treatment in EU countries.

Seperate travel insurance is required because E111 doesn't cover:

repatriation home (maybe up to 10 seats if you've broken a leg)
    ambulances (in some countries)
    travel out for family
    a translator etc.
a nurse to accompany you home

Some of these items can be quite expensive so the general view is that you definitely need seperate travel insurance. Also insurance covers MANY other things like cancellation (through sickness, death etc.), stolen items, legal expnese etc...as well as just medical expenses.

Don't travel without it unless you are very rich and can afford to charter your own pricate jet home.

Some travel insurers insist that you mitigate the cost of any medical treatment by having a valid E111 card.

Yes quite right. I think most of them do these days.

i.e. they expect you to claim what you can via the equivalent NHS system and they will only pay the rest.

    No no no no!!!! :(

E111 will ONLY cover immediately neccessary treatment on the same basis as the locals in the EU. This definition varies widely & you should assume it would only cover the basic life or death.

Every single thing on top, from x-rays, nursing to meds will be charged for.

Miss a meal out on holiday & pay for the insurance instead

Just to add to what a lot of people have said here, travel insurance is a definite must when travelling. Thankfully, I have never had to make a claim, but work in the aviation industry and know how costs can mount up very quickly into several £100,000s. Repatriation is definitely NOT cheap if you have to pay for it yourself, neither are weeks in hospital, nursing, etc.

This is often quoted, but I have yet to see anybody be able to point to any insurance companies terms and conditions to substantiate it.

The insurance I have taken out today (American Express) states it!
    Gone ... or have I?
