My 'morals' aren't the issue here.

Daughter and friends are all grown ups and make their own decisions and they did not feel comfortable staying in the flat after the date they'd agreed to leave.
That's fine by me, I'd have supported them if they chose to stay, but they didn't.

They are all in the fortunate position of having family and friends who are able to put them up temporarily anyway, but the actions of the new landlord caused them a lot of extra hassle and cash.

As it turns out, their agent worked hard to find them a new place which they will hopefully get in to on Friday, and two of them have an appointment with the CAB on Monday for help making a claim against the landlord for costs incurred in aborted and extra van hire and self storage fees.

Good luck with that I doubt she will get anything.....you asked for advice and you got it, we simply pointed out what her rights are in this case.....jeez, you sound like the type of bleeding heart liberal that has been donating money to Africa for the last 30 years (which the government officials use to bathe in champagne) but that's another story....
