Best bank/system for travellers?

I am constantly on the road, especially next month I'll be leaving to South America for 6 months and I realized recently that my old bank account was charging my huuuuuge amounts of fees for withdrawing abroad. So just wondering, other than taking crazy amounts of physical cash with me which obviously isn't safe, what is the best way to transfer money abroad for long periods of time?

Get an account that charges less. If there's time - it may be too late to get one up and running
Remember that buying that unsafe cash to take with you may actually cost something approaching the huge fees that your present account charges - if you don't shop around it certainly will.0 -
There's a lot in the travel section on the main site. http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/
and in the transfer money abroad article http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/foreign-currency-exchange0 -
