Volkswagen DVD Navigation Query

Options
I've recently got a 2007 Volkswagen Passat with DVD Navigation. My house is 6 years old and none of the housing estate is included on the Satnav maps, nor is a local road closure from 3 years ago, which makes me question how useful it's going to be given the road changes/new builds going on everywhere. I have queried this with the supplier and the response was "the vehicle has the most up disc in the vehicle. These are sent to us from VW and they have an update once a year and if the customer wants to renew the disc on a yearly basis, they can request this directly from VW at a cost of approx £100 per disc."

Does anyone know if this is the case and that VW are that far behind in the mapping? Or is the supplier taking the michael........?

By the time a 2007 disc hits the shelves it's already a year out of date. The accuracy of the data is a 2 way process - Some mapping companies are on the ball, others aren't. Some local authorities are very proactive in relaying road changes to the mapping companies and other local authorities don't or are obstructive.

We have recently purchased the update V4 disk for a 2005 Passat (issued with V1) as the old disk did not recognise the postcodes in an area of Lancashire that were changed over 10 years ago ,and told the dealer that this was a problem for us. We had been calling them regularly since 2005 but were told no update had been issued. When we tried the new disk, it still didn't have the details! We contacted the dealer but they will not take the disk back as it was 'issued direct from the supplier' and suggested we sell it on Ebay! As we were charged £202 for this disk, we are understandably disgruntled. The dealers said that they will contact the supplier (Blaupunkt) and make them aware of the shortcomings of the information supplied by Teleatlas. I'm sure that these omissions must be pretty widespread countrywide.icon8.gif
  • Buy a good spec' Tom Tom for under £300 and download updates from their website as and when they release them...the updates usually cost about £30-40 I think. We last updated ours about 3mths ago, took 20mins, job done and it came with safety enhancements (audible warnings to let you know you are over the speed limit on any road).

We use them and they are great, and no we don't get commission as we don't sell them!

Manuf'r nav systems are great but obviously not always quite as easy to update...I recall fondly a BMW Nav system trying to send me up a bridlepath in Essex (much to the surprise of the woman on the horse coming the other way) and a Merc' nav' which lost the plot on the A30 east of Exeter so badly it thought we were over the Atlantic (other than that one misdemeanour I have to say the Merc' Nav' was very good!).

  • That's fine although this is a company car and as our fleet department have to reimburse us for this disk, I doubt if they will stump up for a stand-alone Sat Nav. The VW dealer has offered to take the disk back on a sale or return basis but the likelihood of them selling it is very unlikely. Doesn't help the boss who's quite miffed. It's bad news when he has to use his own Tom Tom in a car fitted with a Sat Nav!icon9.gif
