I actually thought Andy's response was quite funny, since it was "duel" in the medieval sense. Seemed wonderfully apt.

The serious response to your point was made entirely separately.

Wow - first someone said re-test every 10 years - now every 5 years!

Who's going to fund all this extra testing and examiners then?

By the way my definition of an 'elderly driver' is anyone at least 20 years older than I am.

And I have no intention of telling you how long I've had a bus-pass for. LOL ;)

I am always immediately suspicious of anyone who tries to dismiss the idea of retests on cost grounds. Scared of failing perchance?

    Indeed.

"Duel carriageway" is not an uncommon typo and it always makes me smile with the image it conjures up :).

Like 'duel fuel', which I spotted in an official British Gas publication!
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

Very funny - LOL - :rotfl: - Not at all - I'm running scared of the thought of extra taxes to pay for it all.

Or will someone suggest an extra 3p/litre of fuel tax?

The whole thing is a political hot-potato.

Older folks are more likely to turn out to vote don't forget.

I dunno, getting a load of gas and electricity together in a small arena could be interesting. I vote for David Cameron to be the referee.

That would be a fuel duel.

Is there something special about dismissing it on cost grounds rather than any other grounds?

On what grounds could I try to dismiss the idea that would not make you suspicious that I was scared of failing?

I figured that people who were annoyed about it on cost grounds are the same people who are annoyed about having to pay £20 every 10 years to renew their photo.

I.e. people annoyed at an extra recurring fee being added for the privilege of being allowed to continue to drive.

    It's a perfectly valid complaint I think.
