Find my Iphone

A while ago I read a news story where a woman had her iphone stolen and recovered it soon after because it secretly took a photo of the woman who had taken it, I cannot find the story now but my mum has just spent a lot of money on an ipad, I was wondering if anyone knew of a similar thing for this device.
I found this on the Apple site but it does not look similar at all, does anyone know a better product than the companies own?

The iphone that was tracked must have been jailbroken with something like igotya or icaughtu installed:beer:0

No, it doesn't need to be jailbroken.
I've seen a few stories over the last few months and most of the time it involves a free app called Prey.1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?0 -
Thanks, never knew about this one, surprised this is a free app will try it out, hope it has the same benefits of Igotya, with a picture being taken if someone tries to turn the phone off from the lock screen or get the passcode wrong, most of the tracking software available to non jailbroken phones dont have this feature:beer:0

Yes it works , have posted before on this forum .
Daughter left laptop on Birmingham Railway station , spotted the device as train pulled out . Informed the railway police .
Ten days later , up pops the info on home PC .
Gave the railway police ....... ISP , location GPS , name of guy ( he had signed into his web mail ) AND a photo wearing a distinctive red t shirt.
Police in ... Newcastle within 2 hours were knocking on his door , he was still wearing that t shirt , as he was busy changing the desktop he had no defence . My daughter got her lap top back , personally del by the grateful railway police after the court case. Thief got fined £300
Prey works on PC / laptops / tablets and smart phones . Its free ( up to three devices)............install today for peace of mind.0 -
I use find my iphone/ipad on the ipad/iphone. It's an apple only product so obviously integrated in with itunes and allows you to use itunes to locate it, block it, report it stolen etc.
Prey is also on the market, and similarly as good with their controls being used on the web instead of with itunes. Prey would not be able to block it, but has other options like take pictures etc. I am not too sure about how well it works with ios and their closed OS. I'd suggest you try both on there. Prey worked quite well on android with full access regarding the picture taking etc, but i am not sure how well it did on the ipad when I last looked a fair time ago.
But first and foremost tell her to use a text based lock with a decent password (not a number lock) and keep it on!!! Also tell her to set it to wipe after X numbers of failed attempts. That way it will at least keep her data safe.
As a by and by of which I always say if you have an iphone or a 3g enabled ipad set both of the damn locks. Set the device lock and the sim lock, and keep them enabled. Also set to wipe after x amounts of failed tries and for the love of however many threads we see here, BACK UP OFTEN!
The device lock stops it being used. The sim lock stops the sim being taken out and used in another device thus giving access to any data on the sim, and your contract/tariff/call use etc. Not much point doing one or the other; do both. And insure them. Always insure them and make sure it covers water damage, as well as any calls made from the phone being reported stolen. As soon as it goes missing, call your mobile provider and tell them, note the date/time and persons name that you are speaking to, and always report it stolen with a crime number.
** a lot of banks offer reasonably priced account extras that may cover phones and gadgets upto a set amount, including likes of cameras too!
If not look outside but always check water damage, and call costs from reporting it stolen.0
