Asking new Occupants to redirect mail

I can honestly say a big fat NO to this. I forwarded my LL's mail on - as even though she had left the house a year before we started renting it, and someone else had rented it before us, the silly mare had not given her forwarding address to half the people she needed to. So we ended up taking mail to the agent, and sometimes posting it through the door of her new house - 3 miles away. We ended up putting it into the postbox with 'return to sender' on when we got sick of doing it after 12 months or so of doing it, and didn't once get a damn thank you!
After about 18 months, we just started binning it. We're not servants, handmaidens or the bloody Royal Mail, and whats more, the old hag tried to take half our deposit when we left for basically naff-all, so clearly did not appreciate ANYthing we did for her and her property.
Sorry Rox, i don't mean to sound harsh and I am sure you mean no harm, but I think it's a cheek for someone to expect people to forward your mail on to your new house. For a week until the redirection service kicks in yes, but indefinitely? No. Some people do have other things to do.
It's fifty quid for a YEAR for everyone in the house with the same surname, so if a family of four do it: it's twelve pounds fifty per person for the YEAR. If you're not aware of this, then fair enough, but if you are, then you're taking the p1ss, expecting people to do this for you indefinitely...0 -
I do agree, but reality is that some letters get delivered even after setting up RM redirection. Don't know the statistics.... maybe 1 in 20?Soleil_lune wrote: »

So a friendly chat (yes, face-to-face), and explanation that "the odd letter might slip through Redirection, would you mind forwarding - here's some labels".
I've happily done that for previous occupants, for a while, and usually they stop coming after a few months (assuming the recipients have been telling people/organisations their new address).
But there is obviously a limit.0 -
Fair enough GM, But the person asking it must set up a redirection service and not expect the person at their old house to send the letters on, from all and sundry that you may not have given your new address to/will not have given your new address to. This may include spam mail/junk mail/credit card offers/catalogue account offers/old friends you lost touch with and heaven knows what else.
To ask them to pick up the (very rare) letter that has slipped through after you have set up a redirection is fair enough, but people need to get the redirection service done and not expect people to be their postal servants.0 -
I set up a redirect for 12 months to catch the Christmas cards from those people I'd overlooked informing.
I think you can still write the new address on the envelope and it will get there without difficulties - as far as I'm aware the letters I forward to my 'previous occupant' are successful.0 -
Send some self addressed labels. They won't want to hand write your new address on every letter. If someone asked me to do that I'm not sure I'd even bother shredding their mail before binning it.0
