File sharing-XP and Vista

I have spent literally years trying to find a way to file share between two computers. This is my latest attempt. I read a post earlier that suggests their may be issues between file sharing with vista and XP, but I couldn't figure out the problem through that post. So my question: how do I file share between two computers? BUCK is desktop hooked up wirelessly to a router with XP, DARRIN is a laptop hooked wirelessly to the router (WRT54G from linksys) with vista. For right now, all we want to do is transfer some huge folders from BUCK to DARRIN, although in the future I would like to be able to transfer anything from DARRIN to BUCK as well. Where do I begin? I have no idea what to do at all. Do I have to enable things? Change IP addresses? Forward ports? Make a new network? Everything is essentially default installation for the network and our computers, with DARRIN running norton internet protection and his having mcafee something (if that helps).
