How do I get Solicitors to give us a date?

Getting really frustrated with our solicitors, they return calls and emails when they can be bothered (if at all). We are 14 weeks into the buy and sell process, almost everything is in place apart from now apparently waiting on sellers solicitors to confirm a couple of queries, apparently they were chased on the 12th September. We have time booked off work 7-11 October - expecting to have completed before then, solicitors have known dates since day one and say that they're hopeful we'll be in for then, still can't get them to commit to getting us a completion date for that week and it's now 2 weeks away. How do we get them to get their ar$3 in gear so to speak?

How can your solicitors give you a date for Exchange, or Completion if
waiting on sellers solicitors to confirm a couple of queries,
this might take another day, or 3 months....

    What are the queries?

Booking time off on assumption of Completion date was premature - Completion date will only be known once you have Exchanged.

Until Exchange, no date is certain.
  • Try being complimentary about what they are wearing, seem interested in what they say, hold their gaze for a fraction longer than you normally would, laugh at their jokes, maybe a light touch on the forearm. Then mention dinner, or a film you haven't seen.

It's not foolproof, but well worth a try.

Seeing as this is probably the most expensive purchase you will make in your life you want to make sure your investment is sound don't you? You are in a chain, probably more than you know. If you are purchasing Leasehold flat it can be a very long winded process especially if there is a managing agent appointed, and a RTM Co or Management company involved. Saying that some solicitors can be frustratingly slow, it's a production line and you are just stuck going around and around until everybody is ready. Maybe you could suggest your solicitor contacts the other side’s solicitor to give them a date to reply with the questions otherwise you will pull out. It is all subject to contract atm at until you exchange. I think good solicitors are worth their weight in gold, when you find a good one keep them forever. I found mine through another forum, he lives miles away from me but is a wizard with L&T law, which I need as I am a freeholder. Good luck
If you don't ask, you don't get! ;)

Solicitors don't decide the dates of exchange or completion. Once all the queries are resolved they will let you know you are ready to exchange. Then every buyer and seller will try to agree the dates, communicating through their solicitors.
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!
