Claiming Back Halifax Unplanned O/D Fee's

Hi I am trying to claim back Unplanned O/D Fee's from the Halifax. I have read through the online instructions and seem to be eligible under the hardship reason. What I need to know is can I claim back the whole charge or if I went £5 over my planned overdraft and got charged £50 can I claim back the £50 or just the £45 extra. I am finding this very confusing.
Thanks for any help in advance

Are you looking to request a refund of charges over a long period or is this just a one off charge?I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Financial hardship claims are limited to recent charges, maybe the last 6 months or so. Before you submit a claim, make sure that there are no transactions to Sky, mobile phone contracts, eating out, holidays, etc on your statements, or they'll just reject it.0 -
There are defiantly transactions with sky on there but the other things all come from a separate bank account. I'm presuming I can't make a claim now just on the basis I have been charged more than going over or do they only accept hardship claims?0

You can attempt to reclkaim the full value of the charges (but not the amount of overdraft you spent that put you into the overdraft situation)
Whilst you can go back the 2-3 years you later indicate in this thread, note banks will normally only refund about the last 6 months charges (plus perhaps waive further charges for 3-6 months) for those in financial hardship, so don';t be surprised if that is what they offer.
Note also that each financial hardship case is reviewed on its individual merits and the bank are under no obligation to refund any charges.
Having said that, you indicate in your post the charges may have accrued from being only £5 in debt? Is that correct?
Halifax have a charge free buffer on overdrafts. Depending on your account this may be £10 or £50, both of which are obviously more than £5, so perhaps you shouldn't have been charged at all?
I'm not sure when this buffer was introduced, but I'm sure the bank will tell you if you ask.
Note that the buffer relates to any overdraft, planned or unplanned, so if you mean you have say a £50 planned overdraft and you went £5 over that, making a total of £55 in debt, then it would be correct that you were charged as this would exceed the free buffer (but you can still try to claim under financial hardship)0 -

I'm sorry, but if you can afford things like Sky TV, then the bank will not consider you are in genuine financial hardship.
Furthermore, even if you were in genuine financial hardship, banks will usually only consider refunding on your main account, so if you have another account with most of your tansactions coming out of, you will fail on that score too.0
