Dover-Calais Ferry - is it worth getting there early?
Comments

On a Friday during the holiday period, they will try to put you on an earlier boat if they have space. Their later sailings should be progressively busier, so they'll be happy to have the extra space later. This is standard policy as expressed to me at Dover check-in some time ago.
Don't forget to ask nicely!0 -
We've never been charged a supplement for turning up early on Norfolkline or P&O and I've never heard of anyone paying a supplement either. I have no experience of Seafrance or Speedferries.
Availablity will be dependant upon day and ferry company. Norfolkline carries fewer cars but their car numbers are steadily increasing.
If you fail to get on early, Dover beach is quite pleasant. There are also harbour pleasure trips, or the pier to walk along, or the shopping outlet, or a couple of great restaurants near the beach. Otherwise, you could take the footpath up the cliffs (should take no longer than 30 minutes up and 10 minutes down) to the National Trust tea rooms where you get the best view of the channel.0 -
Yep, my experiance has also been that providing there is space, they will fit you on an earlier boat at no extra cost......
As for keeping the kids entertained - have a look at some of the download sites, and grab yourselves some free 'spoken word' book downloads.
My kids will sit quite happily in the car listening to a story being read to them (it was 'Horried Henry' last week!!!!!!!)0 -
From P&O website
(vii) If you travel on a booking purchased at a price lower than that chargeable for a particular sailing, we may charge you the difference between the price you have paid and the price of that particular sailing, prior to embarkation.
(i) Where, under the terms of an offer, an amendment is allowed, an administration fee of £10 (Eur 14) will be charged on each occasion that the booking is amended. You will also be required to pay any difference between the original price and the fare applicable on the day you make the amendment. This fee will apply to any change in the route, date, time, passenger numbers or vehicle types. Special promotional fares are not amendable.
Seafrance
11. AMENDMENTS, certain ticket types allow you to alter the dates and times of travel. However, if you choose to travel at a different date or time to that of your original booking, any relevant additional fare may apply. Any surcharge will be the difference between the fare you paid and the fare applicable to your revised sailing choice. Please check the flexibility and terms and conditions of your ticket at time of booking.
Speedferries
Have a sign up at their chech-in desks advising of the amendment fee if you arrive early or late although I can't remember whether it's £10 or £15I haven't got one!0 -
Thanks for all the advice! The ferry crossing came with our Camping Life booking (paid for with Clubcard vouchers). I think we will chance getting there early, providing we are organised enough on the day of course!0
