dealer service gone wrong

I had my motorbike serviced about a month ago I thought everything was fine until I cleaned it today
I done full checks to find there was no engine oil
I have filled it and no leaks so I guess the failed to put it in

Is it fair to say I want next service free?

Have you ridden it since it's service?
If not, you'd need to prove they forgot to put the oil in it since some time has passed.

Is it possible they put oil in it and maybe not enough and / or the oil has burnt or leaked from somewhere else?

  • Yes have ridden it looks like had just enough oil to keep it going but did not touch dip stick
As you said the problem is proving it
there is no sign of leaking on the garage floor
  • Is the bike upright when you take the measurement, or is it on the side stand?

It's a while since I have ridden motorbikes, but when I did they had to be upright to take the reading.

Sounds like they failed to top it up after the filter filled up.

The chances of getting them to admit it are probably close to zero, just avoid in the future.

Oh .. and check your oil more than once a month
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

thanks yes I phoned them they wont admit it.
they said it must have burned it but I'm not sure a 6 month engine will burn a litre of oil in a month.

I very much doubt that there was NO engine oil in it as, as you have been using it, the engine would have suffered catastrophic damage and probably seized. There is the possibility that the bike is using or loosing oil but the most likely cause is that insufficient oil was put in when the bike was serviced. As you have not mentioned that the oil light was illuminated this further supports the fact that it at least had some oil in it after the service.

What make / model is it and what is the mileage? Have you had it from new?

For your own peace of mind I would top the oil up as recommended in your owners manual and then keep a weekly check on the oil level. If the level is going down rapidly then you will need to take the bike back to the dealer for investigation under warranty. (Assuming that being six months old it is still under warranty) The age of the engine does not dictate how much oil it uses - the way it was run in and the usage will have a bigger influence. And, yes, it is absolutely possible for a new engine to use a fair bit of oil - ask any owner of a BMW flat twin!

As a final note, I would not leave oil checks so far apart. I check my oil and tyres weekly and brakes & bearings once a month. Look after your bike and it will serve you better.
