Redecoration of

I have used a decorator for a number of years. He does decoration for the public areas in the over 55 development where I live.
He has increased his costs over the years but a quote he has given me for my bathroom seems too high to me. It is half tiled needs painting of one door velux window which is not being painted and requires 2 rolls of wallpaper no skirting
Quote if for £250 he is painting my living room ceiling and cost £345 Bedroom £650 for paper the bedroom which needs 7 rolls of paper .

Is this a fair price?? Think I should get another quote but I am not sure where to go to find another decorator where the standard of work would be good.
Bedroom paper is Farrow and Ball and cost £75 per roll and the paper for the bathroom £41
His price may be fair but I just don't know I want to have my hallway but have not asked for a quote for this
Thanks you and I do appreciate your advice

Sue

oops ommitted to say that the title is wrong should have said bedroom but I am also looking at decorating other rooms
The ensuite bathroom is also being done. He is coming to start tomorrow but wondered if when I need other rooms I should seek another decorator. This one has put his prices up a lot in the past couple of years. It is where to look for another decorator.

    Thanks Sue
  • Hi susan...your posts are a little confusing..although having said that,if I tell you my thoughts then you can perhaps work out if the charges you are being quoted are fair.

For a painter/decorator then you should be looking in the region of £125 per day as the labour charge and all materials ie paint and wallpaper added as extra to that figure
When wallpaper is needed then there is probably going to need to be an extra amount accounted for although not needed to cover eventualities of patten match and wastage....these unused rolls are usually returned to you on completion or refunded from your bill.
When I estimate wallpaper usage its usually at 3 drops per roll but that does vary from house to house and also patten repeat
i hope that sheds some light on your costings.

if he's providing the paint , it's not too bad ,for the bathroom the paper isn't included in the price ?

is it £345 to paint the living room ceiling / how big is it , does it need a lot of preparation work , if it just needs painting then that is too high

the bedroom seems a bit ott, but then i haven't seen it , do the walls need cross lining , often with expensive papers they recommend this

without seeing a, what the job entails and b,what he has quoted for it's difficult to tell .
however if you have used him before and are happy with his work then i personally would use him especially if i am paying £75 for a roll of wallpaper , i would want someone who knows what they are doing rather than plucking a name from the phone book

This seems like the right answer to me.

Thank you so much everyone. You have helped to clarify matters for me. Main reason I was asking is that a few people who live in my Development including a friend who says he is now too expensive. She is having some decoration done next week by a different decorator. My Decorator more or less these days does all the work which is tendered for 5 different buildings.
£125 a day sounds about right as the joiner I use charges £20 an hour so £160 a day. I buy the paper but he provides the paint. I would say that I pay more than £125 per day for him
Ceiling in lounge it is a good size and it needs some sealing to areas where
water had come through. He will do coats and he provides the paint.
No extra work in the bathroom He did say 2 figures saying possibly so much or it could be more I am going to ask him for a definate quote. He has not written anything down

Bedroom is a good size he says 7 rolls but I have bought an extra roll as if you are short then you must buy another 3 rolls and will not take any paper back.
Although it costs £75 per roll I know it will look great when it is done. I am pretty certain that he will cross line it as he has when I have bought paper previously. I am happy enough with the price for the bedroom Have just replaced the windows which are arched dormer and of course the room has got areas where there are much lower .
I think you have all given good advice in that to want to pay less but have bought expensive paper If the end result was poor I would regret ot.
You have all helped me to make a decision based on your views and I will continue to use the decorator i have used from some years,

He is due to start the work in the morning. I am going to ask him again about the cost of the bathroom. The main thing is that he does a good job!

I'm always happy to pay a bit more when I've used someone before and know the standard of their work.
