Negotiating Quote for Conservatory

We've had our first quote out of three for a conservatory we plan on having built before Christmas. We're not particularly keen on this company as they seem to contract all/most of the work out, however, the conservatory is as follows:

4.5x3m Edwardian Style conservatory with polycarb roof
Dwarf wall
High wall to one side where the fence is (with 3 x opening windows at the top)
Opening windows above every panel
3 x stainless steel double gang sockets
Ceiling fan/light
Switch for light and switch for fan
All walls, including back wall of house plasterboarded and skimmed
Ceramic Floor Tiles up to £15/sqm

Price has come in at £10,900 inc vat

Is this a good price for the work above? As this is their first quote, I'm reluctant to just agree to it without any haggling.

    no heating ?

We're supplying the heating ourselves as I work for a designer radiator manufacturer.
  • don't forget the room stat & zone valve, but your designer rads won't heat it anyway, tbh i'd be looking at ufh

I know you're going with the conservatory and this isn't the question you asked today.

I'm just taking a break from costing - I very quickly, and very roughly ran your sizes through to see for my own curiosity how an extension would compare to conservatory cost. With a flat roof, big patio door and a large window on one side, heating and building control sign off it came out at just over £21k.

Thought I'd share it with you. Nearly double. The difference is whether it adds that much to the price of the house.

Don't you think it would be an idea to wait for your other two quotes to arrive? Just sayin'

    Cheers

Had another quote today but they've measured the width of the house wrong.

Latest quote we've had is for £9,700 but measurements are wider than the house and the quote doesn't have any detail at all so have had to ask for confirmation on a few points.

Ok, so we've settled with a quote for our conservatory...not the cheapest but the company we feel will give us the absolute best finished product:

4.5x3m Edwardian Style conservatory with polycarb roof
    Dwarf wall
High wall to one side where the fence is (with 3 x opening windows at the top)
    Opening windows above every panel
4 x stainless steel double gang sockets (one at eye level for TV)
    Chrome Ceiling fan/light
Switch for light and switch for fan
All walls, including back wall of house plaster-boarded and skimmed

We decided not to go with ceramic floor tiles as we want something a bit warmer, like vinyl tiles which will follow through into the kitchen.

    Total cost: £10,400 inc vat

Which company? Is it one of the big national ones like Anglian or Everest?

The price seems slightly high, but not by much. You could probably save £2k by shopping around.
