My Bicycle damages Parked Car

Hope someone could be of some help .
Last sunday i parked my bicycle next to the shop window and went into the shop .Accidently the idle bike fell on a parked car and scratched the car door . The car owner was rude when i offered to get it repaired , so i told him to speak to his insurancers.
Now he sent me a solicitors letter holding me responcible for negligence -
1. Failed to ensure that my bike was properly secured so as not to cause hazard to thers .
2. Failed to ensure the safety of others in close proximity .
They want me to pay GBP 229 Policy excess and all damages.
Please advise how i could get out of this mess . All legal advise will be appreciated.

Notify your household contents insurers and pass the correspondance onto them. You are covered for this type of thing under the liability section of the policy. If you have a contents policy you will have this cover.
They will deal on your behalf.
As well as the £229 excess (odd amount?) his insurers will also want paying for the repairs so the final bill could be several hundred quid.0
