There have been quite a few scientific studies carried out - just search online.
The magnetic ones aren't really very expensive - you can buy them for around £20-30.
The electronic ones can be a little more costlier. Some of the companies do offer a money-back guarantee if you are not satisfied:

Meanwhile back on topic. You might like to consider the MBR of an armoured cable.
How about getting a sparks in to advise and cost it for you?

Would it not make more sense to take it up to the loft from the 1st floor bathroom ((just a few feet up), across that and down the front wall? Since there will aready be cabling from the CU to the 1st floor anyway, it may be possible to run it all internally by following the existing route.
If it has to be run externally, can it not be conventional cabling in a waterproof conduit? Surely armoured cabling is primarily for subsurface external use?No free lunch, and no free laptop
