as long as it isn't actually hissing implying a release of pressure rather than gently bubbling. I think OP might need to be a bit more specific as to the nature of the noise.

    Cheers

It does sounds like it's intermittently hissing, to release pressure. The rest of the time, when it's not hissing, it just sounds like it's working away heating the water. It's the release of pressure hissing that I don't think sounds quite right?

Having done a little bit of reading, it seems I don't need the immersion heater switched on anyway and can heat the water up in my tank from the boiler and just save the immersion as a hot water back up plan if/when the boiler packs up.
  • Photos would help folks help you. Don't ignore the hissing.

That's exactly how it should be used. Plus it is far more economical to heat the water using your boiler. The immersion heater should only be used where you need hot water quickly e.g. in an emergency.

Absolutely and it can't be ignored as DYN says. Thats why I asked about autoairvents. If you do have one and it that which is doing the hissing that would imply that you have a circulation issue. Its important to nail down exactly where this hissing is coming from.

Thats true but its a second order consideration at the moment.

  • Thanks for all contributions to my thread. Based upon the "it should not be ignored" comments, I am having a Man that Can, out to see it in the next few days. In the meantime it will remain switched off.

cheaper to use your eyes and ears

The immersion should be off anyway as explained above, if the hissing has now stopped, nothing to worry about

if the hissing continues look for a leak with some tissue paper.
