Milk price increase - why?

Options
The price of milk has gone up by 20p for 2L anybody know why? I was trying to buy organic milk from Waitrose which was about £1.65 6 months ago and then it went up to £1.75 or 8 I can't remember but it is now £1.98. that's quite a significant jump - and increase in profits no doubt.

So now I've gone back to buying the cheapest milk because I won't keep on paying any price. I noticed the same increase in Asda.

I wouldn't mind so much if I knew the increase was going to farmers but I doubt it. I'm curious as to why.

Buying organic is getting too costly for anybody on a basic or low income! I want to buy organic fresh produce but not at any price.

You can get 2x 4pt in tesco for £3. I think Yeo Valley is about £1.98 for 2lt. If you can shop around you can often find a better deal.

what really annoys me is that people think that 4 pints and 2 litres are the same, they are not! i noticed in morrisons 4 pints is about £1.38 but they have a cheaper brand (meadow valley?) on offer for £1. same size carton, same milk. only if you look at the back, the cheaper one is 2 litres which equates to 3.5 pints. so yes its 38p cheaper but you lose out on half a pint of milk.

Yeo Valley is on offer at 2 for £3 in asda and I am sure the others are doing similar deals.

Yes, I know about the litre/pint thing and it annoys me that they are allowed to do that.

  • The 'why' is that the harvests haven't been good - so the price of feed goes up - and organic feed moreso I would imagine as their yields are even more at the mercy of nature. Bread, cake, cereals etc (organic and non-organic) will also be going up in the near future for the same reason.

Hang on, wasn't it only last week that they were saying this years harvests have been the best for decades.

In fact, it was only a week or two ago that some farmer was claiming to have had the best wheat harvest in the world ever!

    Waitrose increase in profits ..

Organic 2 for £3 in Sainsburys but check the use by date.

    But they're all con artists.

I didn't see that one, the report I saw was about bread prices going up again because of the overall poor harvest, though I do recall seeing something about regional and crop variations, in that some have been ok. It's not just this harvest that will affect the current milk increase however, but the last also, as that is the one the current/recently used feed was produced from. As with everything, the price changes don't always filter through until some time later, depending on far down the production chain from the raw product the item in question is.
