Orange Broadband VoIP without using their livebox, is it possible?

I recently took the £5 unlimited broadband and VoIP from Orange with my new mobile contract, combined this is working very well cost wise. After a few problems at the start my broadband is now working fine with a Netgear DG834Gv1 router at 8Mbit and feeds a few PCs in the house. I tried the Orange Livebox they supplied but found the speed was dreadful only reaching between 1-1.5Mbit for some reason so that went back in it's box.

The thing I'm missing out on at the moment by not using the livebox is the inbuilt VoIP features with free local/international calls over the broadband connection.

Recently an elderly relative moved in with us, we already have two phone lines in the property so she doesn't have her own at the moment and I'd rather not have another BT line rental to pay. What I'd really like to do is give her the use of this Orange one as her own so she's not bothered by receiving business calls or for other people in the house on the other lines, but don't want to use the Livebox as my router.

Is there a way to use a seperate VoIP box for the Orange service I have but connected directly to the Netgear router, which also allows her to use her big button landline phone on it. I bought a Trust Internet Phone Station ST-1200 in Staples a few months ago in the sale not with this in mind, although that still requires a PC in the loop.

Thanks in advance for any advice. :T

The Livebox is a strange piece of proprietary hardware, designed to make life easy for beginners, but if you try to do something advanced, it isn't straightforward at all, as I've found out in the past.

Ooh that's useful, thanks for that.

The Livebox doesn't strike me as the most technically advanced or best make piece of kit. I see it's made by Inventel, French I think from memory. I have some other DECT phone equipment made by them which is a bit unique too, had to buy that from a German eBay seller as I couldn't find any other manufacturer to make such devices.

I did as you suggested and posted it over on that board too. Had some useful input and have maybe found a possible solution! Will give it a go anyway.

    So thanks again Yazza :T
