Nexus 7 Factory Reset

I'm thinking of giving my 2012 Nexus 7 to my dad as I don't use it as much as i thought I would.

I'm going to do a factory reset and there's a few things I'm not sure about. Firstly, Obviously I don't want my dad seeing my emails etc so I was looking for reassurance about this.

Also, If i do a factory reset does that mean, it's as if app updates never happened. So for example, Talk being updated to Hangouts - will revert to Talk, all the updates that Google Maps has had since i bought the tablet for example - will these updates be lost?

Yes. However when the installation programme runs all the latest updates will be installed.

when you delete your account from the tablet all your emails will go with it.

You just have to make sure you do a complete wipe of the device to remove your files from the "SDCard" area of the device.

Then set your dad up with a Gmail account and log in using his details.

The default Google apps will update (after the play store app updates forst)

When you do this, Google will; still remember the tablet in your android app manager.

AFAIK there is not way to simply tell it that you no longer have the device.
So it may be best to go through the process of uninstalling them all first.

But if your not bothered with that just go for a factory reset - it wipes everything.
  • should i just take the sim card out and throw it away. And tell my dad to get his own?

  • A reset should clear everything - but if you're extra paranoid :D you could also change your Google password (and any others you accessed via device) once you reset. Its a pain, but hey we all change our passwords regularly anyway DON'T WE.........!

That way even if it re links something only what is on device shows - and yes remove SD card. Even if you format it you can get info back in 2 mins. Treat him to a new one.

The Nexus 7 does not have a removable "SD Card"
It has an area of flash memory called "SD Card" for compatibility with apps.

Only way to reliably wipe this (without root access!) is to go through the "OEM UNLOCK" procedure.

It's a bit of a pain but it wipes the entire device.
