I have problems. I'm female, and I'm old. I have a mobile that's 13 yrs old and I know how to use it. Anything with a keyboard makes my brain hurt. I just want to sit here in my chair and teach/join in audio classes and chatrooms. I think I'll just get the laptop. Anything else feels like venturing up the Amazon in the wet season. TY so much for all help
I wouldn't be so down with it. Technology changes incredibly fast nowadays, and it's not necessary to keep up with them, but the more you try things, the better you will get at it. There is a big jump going from likes of old computers to new with operating systems, especially if you now end up with windows 8 and you had xp, or even earlier. You will get better by just doing things, and there are always places like here where you can ask questions freely and people will help you. Even with old phones to new smartphones. A huge jump, but it's the way technology is going so worth playing with them to find out about them.
If it is windows 8, you might want to come back anyway and find info about using classic shell with it. Or just plough on and learn the newer way.
google is also your friend. A simple question will do it in google, and you can browse the answers till you find the solutions, but I'm in the position of thinking that you are never too old to learn new tricks!0 -

So you want to teach others?
You expect others to learn, but you're not prepared to learn something new, most learning will involve moving out of your comfort zone.
The above is not to be taken too seriously. Huge.
p.s there's plenty of older [STRIKE]gits [/STRIKE] people on here, myself included, who are always learning.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Ah but I don't teach IT!

Ah but I don't teach IT!
Never too old to learn new skills!
I was 50 before I even used a computer.
More seriously, there are several threads on here where people have thrown up their hands, saying 'I can't do computers' but then have amazed themselves.
The key is the ability to follow instructions and keep your focus, something often lacking these days.:)
Plenty of patient helpers here.

Why does 'being female' make you incapable of using a keyboard or learning anything new?
I'm not clear exactly what you need the device for, so it's hard to offer suggestions. If you simply want a replacement for the Lenovo, then a Windows laptop would seem the best solution. The point of a tablet is portability, so if used mainly at home it has few advantages. And it won't run any of your old Windows software. A netbook is simply a lightweight laptop. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Don't forget "SMARTBOOKS" ...
Which are combined Phones and Notebooks - they tend to be powered by Android (or Ubuntu) and generally come with Solid State Drives instead of normal HDD's...
They are the best of both worlds0 -
I want a laptop. I want to talk and email and chat. I don't want to take it outside or use it on trains, I want to sit in my chair at the fire, and talk to the world.
I've been reading up and a lot of people moan that Win8 needs a touchscreen.. what do you think? I always listen to you lot;)

OK, so you want a laptop. Since any modern laptop will do the tasks you mention with ease, all you really need to decide is the screen size.
Other basic specs: i3 (or higher) Intel processor, 500GB hard drive minimum, 4GB of RAM minimum, Windows 8 OS.
W8 does not need a touchscreen. Once beyond the Start screen it can be used with a keyboard just like W7. If you don't like the Start screen then bung on Classic Shell to hide it.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Win 8 does not need a touch screen . Get a bit lost on Win 8 with no start button then you install Classic Shell .
Win8 SP1 will return a start button .
Win 8 has tiled apps on the first screen basically for touch use but no reason why they cannot be used with a mouse . Behind that screen its just like Windows 7 .

I use a10 inch tablet to do just that dumping my laptop as it was to big . What do i miss from the laptop rarely if ever the dvd drive . Keyboard no as i find the onscreen keyboard better .

I think I'd prefer a keyboard JJ. Not fussy on a Start button as such, as long as I know how to start the bloody thing
Macman that's great ty, am sure I'll get used to it and if not then will install the classic one. I'm looking at this one, if anybody had time maybe could tell me what you think of it?
