HELP!! we can only get hot water when heating on!

Options
Hello
I am in need of some help please. We gave kids a bath tonight and water was fine, then my oh tried to run a bath and the water came out freezing, we had the boiler set to hot water only. when we put it to heating and water we got about an inch of hot water (and the heating came on) and then it went cold again,

Obviously in this weather we cant have the heating on (and moneywise)
Has anyone got any ideas what this can be
Thanks

Sylvia

    Hi there,
Sorry for being a bit stupid, but what is a diverter? is it expensive?
    Thanks

Probably in the airing cupboard and looks like this, usually it just needs the little motor inside the metal top. Can be DIY but if you aren't sure it's a heating engineer job. Guess £50/60 fitted (at Norfolk prices anyway) ;)

We had this problem when we moved into our new house and it was some switch on the boiler we had knocked -it's not something simple like that is it?

I think Denis99 is on the right lines, i think it is easier to change complete valve, rather than motor, but only my opinion.

In the short term, a lot of diverter valves have a lever which you can slide from side to side letting you manually move the valve to the heating or hot water setting. If you can't see anything have a feel around the back of the valve.

Yep, in the picture above the lever can been seen just under where the black cable is going into the unit.

Costs about £10 for a new motor.

A few years ago I had a similar problem and a plumber wanted £300 to fix it!
  • Before replacing anything just check that the ball valve on your header tank is working porperly and not sticking. The arms sometimes get a little corroded.

    Hi

We all assume that you have a boiler and cylinder. Would that be right??

  • i have just had ours replaced.... we had the heating coming on with the water too, even though the heating was turned off at the timer. mine was fixed for free, its a council property.sounds like exactly the same problem we had.
