eMachines 410 lan problem.

Son has an eMachines 410 pc and is trying to set up broadband.

The onboard lan card is not seen by XP, and the bios has no visible means to enable or disable it.

He has also tried to install a pci lan card but this too is not found by XP.

Have seen somewhere that some manufacturers restrict what end users can do in the bios, is there any way round this, apart from installing a bios utility as he is 30 miles away and has no net connection at all.

Is there a special key combination to access any hidden areas on the eMachines systems.

As per original post - "The onboard lan card is not seen by XP, and the bios has no visible means to enable or disable it.

The onboard lan might be disabled, and XP cannot see either of them.

Try the driver as it can kick the LAN into working with peripheral software, also when looking into the BIOS did you expand all fields as the LAN on/off switch may be under a subtitle within the BIOS its like expanding a folder tree.

Have tried all bios settings, over the phone, the funny bit is that in the manual there is an option to enable/disable onboard lan, but this is not seen anywhere in the bios menus.

There are just 2 spaces where this option and a memory option are shown in the book.

Have you looked on Google for a Bios update? or have you taken the CMOS battery out for a couple of minutes to get all the settings back to factory defualts as then the option may reappear, anyway try that software if no good just perform a system restore to a time before you tried that driver.

Look like the pc will need to come and visit me next week.

I cannot try any drivers, etc as son has no internet access.

Also try PC Wizard or Everest Home Edition to get the make and model of Mobo if you dont have it? and then you can get the bundled chipset drivers (hopefully)

    http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php

    http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=everesthome

Try putting the drivers on a pen drive.

In Device Manager click View - Show hidden devices. Is it there now, in Network adapters?
