Gas Stove Question

Hi
not sure if anyone can help, I would like to buy a gas stove.
I already have a fire surround and currently have a fire basket in there, this provides us with no warmth whatsoever.
The opening of my fire place is only 50cm and all the gas stoves I have found are just above this.
I feel the only option we have is getting a wood burning/multi fuel stove or to rip the fire surround out and start again - which I don't really want to do.
I had someone come over the other day and he told me that wood burners/multi fuel stoves are very messy and the whole place will be covered with black soot every time we light it.
Is this true? as the last thing I want is to be cleaning everyday!
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks
