Emulsion recommendations, please

Having paid over the odds for a well-known brand of 'one coat guaranteed to cover any other colour' white emulsion, I was not pleased to have to apply two thick coats in order to have a white wall.
Similarly, one coat of the above paint, plus several coats of ordinary white emulsion, were barely adequate to make the ceiling white.
Recommendations for a white emulsion which gives decent coverage without multiple applications, would be most gratefully received!

What are you trying to cover? A dark or strong coloured paint, or, for example a badly nicotine stained one?0

With questions like this I always look to what the trade uses as they would know best. I'd stay away from those 'convenience paints' designed for ordinary people that promise miraculous results with little effort.
There are some simple rules for emulsion painting:
1. Preparation - this is the most important part of painting;
2. A 'mist coat' on bare plaster to seal the plaster - allow to dry for 24 hours;
3. Two coats with adequate drying time in between.
As for paints, I recommend Dulux Trade paints for a hogh-quality professional finish or Leyland Contract Emulsion for a reasonable finish.
There really aren't many shortcuts to painting in my opinion.Everyone is entitled to my opinion!0 -

I suspect that the reality is that you are not pleased to have allowed yourself to be taken in by the marketing hype.I was not pleased to have to apply two thick coats in order to have a white wall.
What was the state of it before you started?Similarly, one coat of the above paint, plus several coats of ordinary white emulsion, were barely adequate to make the ceiling white.
Any decent trade spec emulsion. Two thinnner coats are better than one thick one anyway and if you have dark colours to cover you should use an obliterator initially. Any staining should be fixed first of all but thats all about prep. Both oily and waterbased stains will leech through as they are reactivated by the water in the paint - doesn't matter what paint you use. Its poor prep if you don't and not necessarily the paint's fault.Recommendations for a white emulsion which gives decent coverage without multiple applications, would be most gratefully received!

A dark brown emulsion paint, in good condition, with no apparent problems such as greasy patches, damp, etc.
And I agree with other posters' comments on the importance of good preparation - I've been a DIYer for many years. But I haven't emulsioned anything for a decade or more, and the quality of the paint available (in terms of coverage) seems to have gone downhill in that time - last time I bought "one coat" emulsion it only took one coat to cover a dark blue-green colour! Hence my request for brand recommendations.e cineribus resurgam("From the ashes I shall arise.")0 -

if you are trying to cover dark brown , then even with a top quality paint like dulux trade i would expect to allow at least 3 coats to cover , if you thought that the 1 coat stuff would cover in one coat then you are out of luck there , it would only have looked half decent if your ceiling was already white ,0 -
There a great "Rule of thumb" that I use, Look on the tin, if it says "Stir thoroughly before use" DONT buy it, itl be too thin/very messy to use., use the "Gel types" ie Dulux0
