No Toll Charges on Mersey Crossing

Is it legal to start to charge a toll on a bridge, when that bridge has been free to use for over 50 years?

Halton Council are having a new bridge built over the River Mersey. It will be a toll bridge. They will also introduce charges on the old bridge, when none have been made before.

  • Well they created a congestion charge in London and thats been toll free for hundreds of years.

    So probably.

As long as they start charging whilst you half way across. Signs will go up in advance or the news will cover it i guess.

Yes. The orderseems to have been made under the Transport Act 2000 which gives the power to introduce road charging schemes. Mostly used for congestion charging (the streets of central London were free to use until 2003) but no reason I can see why it can't be applied to a bridge.
