Borner Slicer

I saw one of these slicers at the Ideal Home show (as seen on all the best shopping channels) and the demonstrator sliced shed loads of veggies very easily - don't they all!
Thinking it looked a bit plasticky, I bought a stainless steel version which looked more professional. So far we're producing more compost than chopped veggies. Diced onions are almost impossible, Sliced carrots result in more waste than good ........... Have I bought the wrong one - the problem could be that the main blade on this one is straight - the borner has two at 45 degrees.
If you've got one of these and find it good, I'd appreciate your help.
Thank you
