So Halifax told you to try a proper bank? What a shower!

To be fair I had a similar problem with notes and my local Santander had no problem accepting them. Now if Santander can do it surely any financial body with Bank in its title ought to be able to?

You can just post notes to the BoE.

For example many banks won't accept coins except in proper bagged multiples, even though they are clearly legal tender in smaller amounts

Many so called banks will not even do that. Santander refused to accept more than 5 bags of properly bagged coins as a deposit into my account with them because they did not have the space to store bags in their branch. Nationwide have a similar policy although were a little more pragmatic and took the remaining eight bags.

You would never think that Santander regards itself as a bank for businesses!

in as much words by suggesting i try Barclays, i told them that Barclays would probably expect me to be a account holder with them. Hardly worth signing up for £2.60

Its funny, i once tried to change a pocket full of current issue silver coins at the post office for something more pocket friendly and pretty much got told to sod off unless i had a p.o account.

All these financial institutions are nothing but toerags and the fsa regulator is unfit for purpose.

If your bank doesn't provide the services you want, switch. Doesn't exactly make them all toerags that they either won't provide services you want them to or don't want to provide them to you when you aren't their customer.

I will agree with you on one point. The FSA is certainly not fit for purpose any more as it doesn't exist.

Why because they changed a initial like a dodgy car sales business? to the FCA.

HSBC will change any decimal money, including shillings and florins (as they became 5p and 10p). They don't require coins to be bagged either if you don't have one bag's worth.

They also change all notes from England, Scotland, NI, Guernsey, Jersey and IOM without an account being required.

No ID needed either, but if you have a large amount then I suspect they will need something

If you have a really old note then it will sell for twice its value so no point. I would really only consider banking Somerset £10s or later, if they are not in perfect condition.
