When I use IE11 and hover the mouse pointer over a link or picture either the full link address pops up at the bottom left hand corner of the browser screen or if it is a picture a little caption is displayed, for example it will say "Profile" or something like that.
How do I stop the browser doing this as it is bugging the s*** out of me, BTW it does it with Chrome as well, haven't tried Firefox.
I am using Windows 7 HP.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

  • The longer link at the bottom that you've highlighted in red?

On one, IE I would guess you are logged in and on the other longer link you are not?

I would guess that its all to do with advertising and tracking cookies.

If you are getting other popups in IE it may be something to do with a toolbar, look in the tools menu and see if there is anything there you can switch off.

They're designed to be as unobtrusive as possible but as far as I'm aware, and with some Googling to double-check, you can't.

  • You must try Firefox, nobody uses IE out of choice.
How about popping into Currys & trying Windows 8.
I still prefer XP to all other OS's.

The idea of this is that it shows the actual link it goes to, and can give you a little more information - eg link says on web page Barclays Bank, but when you see the link it could say h t t p iamathief.ru/give meyourmoney - that should warn you of a problem , same thing can apply to phishing emails. Just live with it.

Aren't those "pop-ups" actually a part of the function known as the "status bar"? There's probably an option somewhere in the settings related to the display of this. I know there is on the Mac version of Chrome, and in Safari too.

But as aerostar points out, the purpose of this is not spam, but to enable users to know where the link they're clicking actually goes. Very, very important, especially in emails, where phishers frequently use links that, on face-value, go somewhere known to the user (a banking website f.e.), but in fact go somewhere completely different.

I think you should try to get used it. At least it's not Intextual ads, which are genuinely irritating!

Looks like I will have to live with it.
    Thanks for all your comments.
BTW I use IE10 by choice & never had a problem with any IE version.
