schools seeing the effects of HPI

I Had an interesting conversation with a colleague today about some problem pupils in our school.
I said that I thought that one of the reasons for misbehaviour and general dissaffection with school among some of the more chavy pupils has, at its roots, HPI.
When asked to elaborate I said that their parents, having bought a house years ago had now seen its value rise to such an extent that their lifestyle of new cars, foreign holidays, plasma TVs etc. was all paid for by MEWing.
Their children see this and knowing that their parents own dislike of school, lack of qualifications or even lack of employment has not prevented them from enjoying such trappings of wealth think that they will be able to do the same.
Hence, they do not bother working hard and gaining an education in order to improve their lives (like me and other working class kids have done in the past) because they can just be like their parents.
Sadly, they (and their parents) do not realise that HPI will not come to the rescue of their generation and that they are destined for servitude and poverty as part of a global workforce.
My colleague, normally bullish about property, agreed with me and may have finally seen the light that HPI has many social implications which are not necessarily for the good.

It's an interesting argument but I can't help but feel it's just another rationalisation for the children concerned.
I remember those scrotes when I was at school and they went in for nihilism to justify not working.
In many cases it was because they weren't bright enough to do well (not their fault) and rather than admit it they prefered to hate the system and everything about it with the encouragement of their parents.
Understandable but I don't think HPI is to blame even if they blame it, after a fashion anyway.0 -
Sorry to be dim... what is 'MEWing'?“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”

what is 'MEWing'?
Mortgage Equity Release - you remortgage your property, borrowing a little (or a lot) more than you were previously to pay off debts or release equity to invest in a business such as Buy to Let (BTL).
Currently, a lot of people are spending money on credit cards and 'MEWing' to pay the credit cards off.
That sort of spending amounts to about 4% of GDP which means that if House Price Inflation (HPI) reverses in the next few years, our economy is 'up !!!!!! street', as my Old Mum used to say.0 -
ahhh... yes... thanks... had guessed the meaning but couldn't find words to fit the Acronym!:o
I'm interested in your take on this and think you may well have a point wecan. However, it's a bit difficult for me to comment at the moment because:
a) I'm shattered!:D I have a cold with severe brain ache today:eek:
b) Although I taught in a deprived part of London for many years, my recent experience is in a very affluent and privileged area where the vast majority of parents put a very high value upon education. I would have to think back and compare etc and am too **ackered to do that and make any kind of coherent statement!
I'll have a think... chat with colleagues tomorrow if I get a chance and get back to you!“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”
