How to read an old internal HDD

I've got a HDD taken out of my old PC which ran Windows XP was 10 years old but wouldn't start up passed a certain screen.

I've now connected this old HDD to my new computer which runs W8.

When I now try to open the old HDD I get a prompt saying I can't do it.
I've run Malwarebytes on the old HDD and it only found 3 PUP problems.

Any ideas how I could open the old HDD I think there are a few things on there I need.

What is the full wording of the prompt/ message?

    How are you connecting it?

Can you see a folder structure or does it not get that far?

How have you connected it? I was in a similar situation although it was XP and W7 not W8, and I used one of these disc caddies to put the old drive in and connect it via a USB port. It worked fine.

    The prompt says:

    F:\ is not available
    Access is denied.

Which seems strange when I can run a Malwarebytes scan on the HDD.

I'm using a USB 2.0 to IDE cable called an R-Driver to make the connection between the HDD and my pc.
It has a power cable an a transformer powering the ext HDD and then a USB connection to my pc.
Surely it must be working otherwise I wouldn't be able to do the Malware scan. All the right lights are lighted up.
During the scan I can briefly see the names of the folders on the opld HDD.

I think it's because the "owner" of that file is a user on the XP computer, who doesn't exist any more.

That would be my guess as well although that article applies to Windows XP Pro, Windows 8 should give the option to reset the permissions with a UAC prompt.

I couldn't get past the Welcome to Windows screen iirc. It was 12 months ago.

Anyway I think I've managed to download my 'Documents' and photos using one of the Tools on Glary Utilities.

But I can't seem to find my Bookmarks which I'd also like to download.

They'll be in a Folder named Favorites (US spelling), probably.

Search the drive for this filename.

googler's advice applies if you used Internet Explorer on the XP machine, if you used Chrome, Firefox or another browser, they're stored elsewhere...
