What price should I be asking for my BMW?

  • Apparently everybody dislikes the compact.... but me! I had a few too. Unfortunately though not worth much. Unless you wanted to put an MOT on it... & then it's not worth much more. Possibly £200 trade & £800 to sell with an MOT.

You could consider ringing around the local traders who may take it off your hands for just over scrap money. Otherwise, ebay, piston heads or gumtree. Car & Classic online have an area for not so classics.

The miles are good in its favour.

    Good luck.

Thanks for your replies all. I think I'll MOT it soon and get a proper picture of what (if anything) needs doing and then sell it on. Didn't expect to get hundreds for it! :) Hopefully the relative low miles and a fresh MOT will be in its favour.
    In deep...
  • I struggled to sell my 318i tourer earlier this year. It had 6+ months MOT and no tax (but would tax at buyers expense). It had 120k on the clock on just a tiny bit of bubbling on the wing, a previous owner had replaced the interior with full black leather which was immaculate.
I got £450 for it after listing it on eBay three times.

The 1.6 engine is a bit gutless so not the most desirable.

It's interesting that the Compact is worth so little.

Presumably all the perceived wisdom about BMWs being so much better made than mundane vehicles doesn't apply to this model? After all, that's why those cars are so expensive second-hand -- isn't it?

The compact was just not popular, mainly down to looks ( its like a bit of the car is missing).

Nothing to do with the build quality. Plus this one is the 1.6.

Not forgetting its 15 years old. No doubt it will do another 100,000 miles without batting an eyelid, But if you want to own a BMW, this would not be your first choice.

But if someone just wants a reliable car to get from A-B and intend keeping it. £700 for this with a new MOT is a good buy.

People wanting "Premium" cars want BMW's and Audis but care about image - so tend to get newer or top spec models. That era of M3 is still worth £3k-£5k, or 328i convertible £2k+
People who want cheap cars are put off BMWS by perceived high running costs, repair costs, fuel costs. In short, the want a cheap car, so look for a cheaper brand (in their eyes).

So cars like this fall through the gap and are hard to sell. It's a shame, because they are solid little cars and a good bargain motoring prospect. Savvy motorists can pick them up for peanuts and get many enjoyable and reliable miles out of them.

I know that -- my point was that the "build quality" argument with BMW residuals in general is demonstrated to be false by the compact. It's all down to image.

Yup -- agreed. The only issue I would have with them is the parts prices -- but then that's a price you tend to pay with any well-made car, regardless of brand.

    From memory they're actually a 1.9.
