My Dad considered a Lexus IS before he bought his A4, might be worth a look. Only thing he didn't like about it was the 6th gear struggled at legal motorway speeds. Obviously there's HGF to consider but Lexus have extended the warranty for this.

They didnt do a diesel in the first gen IS200, and i dont think the second gen one is at the O/P's price point.

    Could be wrong.

The local firm here run a fleet of 15ish Skoda octavia 1.9 Diesels .
Every one has well over 250k miles on and they still go strong each day every day.
Personally I do not like the brand, but bang for buck money saving they must be one of the cheapest cars to run ever built.

The 1.9TDI is the engine to go for across the VAG group. Its found in the Passat and Golf, plus various Skodas, SEAT's and Audis.

A 2006 IS220 goes for roughly the same as a 2006 diesel Audi A4. OP hasn't mentioned a budget but I'm thinking at least £5k for anything decent.

You really will be spending the extra money just for the privilege of driving an Audi. That may well be worth it to you, but its a lot of dosh. :(

    Really?

These days I think it's more about how new it is, than what brand it is.
Some snooty, f**ker called my 2004 Vectra an old shed when it was just 4 years old.

Of course a name can hold a value, but really only because they're so over-priced in the first place.

Anyhow, these German "prestige" vehicles ain't all they're cracked up to be (although decades ago yes), designed really to only last a few years. The sort of people who buy them new, don't keep them much beyond 3 years and the manufacturers don't give a damn about subsequent owners.

I had put that because from the original post "I want to upgrade to a Audi A4". It depends on your definition of 'upgrade'. In age terms its a poor upgrade as its going to be a lot of cash just to move up two years. However the O/P has mentioned that they want to move to 'something more reliable', so that might be their take on an 'upgrade', which they're not going to get with their proposed choice.

OR upgrade could mean you're upgrading the type of car you're driving from a family car to an exec saloon, if thats your bag.

Its the second owners i blame to be honest.

First owner will probably have a servicing pack or the car will have been back to the main dealer under warranty if anything went wrong.

Owner number 2 tends to take the car from say, 40K miles to 90K miles, perhaps not changing the oil on time, skimping on maintenance etc. They then flog it on after 3-4 years leaving someone else with the problems.

Picked this link up from another thread, its about that age of Audi, on Honest Johns website - it covers off the problems i was talking about

  • I would recommend avoiding the multitronic autoboxes on Audis - they seem to be quite troublesome.

    What utter *****

I'd be disappointed with any car that couldn't be driving well at 10-12 years old doing 12k a year.

Other than tyres / brake pads and exhaust, nothing has gone wrong with my last 2 cars and I change at roughly 150k miles or 10 years.

Both diesels, both German, but I'd be happy driving a VW, Skoda or SEAT as most engine components are identical.
