IE opens then closes at once and will not start

This evening, out of the blue, I could not use Internet Explorer. It opens, then reports it cannot start and closes. It will not run the usual fault self diagnosis and fix routine. I tried shutting it down and restarting my PC but no joy.

I have a full realtime sub to Norton which is fully uptodate, but just to be sure, I updated it again, and have just run a full system scan and it says my system is as clean as a whistle. The option now seems to be to do a reset and see if that works. I don't know what has caused it.

I am running internet explorer on a PC with Windows 7 Professional and plenty of spare capacity. (Chrome still appears to work). No fancy software. Any suggestions?

try a malwarebytes scan, reset ie to defaults, under tools, internet options, advanced, and if it continues, post a hijackthis log
