Roof Insulation advice please !!

Can anyone help with advice on what to look for when buying roof insulation. We are only doing a bit at a time as we need to cover the insulation with boards to create more floor/storage space, but we have no idea about thickness levels etc and where to get a good deal. Can anyone help.

Thanks very much in advance

    Thickness should normally be 270 mm these days look here
    for more info;

    Last time i checked Wickes were doing a 3 rolls for 2 offer which i believe was sponsored by British gas. Worth taking a look there if you have one local.

    Be aware that if you compress the insulation by covering it with boards it becomes less effective, however the boards also insulate so the effect may cancel each other out.
  • Realisticaly you want about a foot of insulation in the loft. Sounds a lot, but new houses have 270mm as standard. Think very carefully about boarding your loft, maybe just do it over a rarely used room, that you turn the radiator off in. Putting boards in the loft will cut down the amount of insulation you can get in, you will only be able to use about 100-150mm, remember even if you stuff in two layers of 150mm insulation, underneath the boards, its not doing any more than one layer, as it is the air that provides the insulation, not the product itself.

    It is possible to nail wood over the joists to give extra height for the insuation to go in, but this is time consuming. For instance I insualted an old Victorian house for a couple, 1/3 was boarded, 2/3 not boarded (and cross laid with 2 layers of 150mm) the time for me to do all the inslation for the 2/3, (including removing a some old nasty stuff) was about a day, to raise the joists, and board, and insulate under, for the 1/3 was about 3 1/2 days. Was a long job as only access was through garage at end of 100ft garden, then up to loft of three story house with HIGH ceilings.

    My recommendation would be to go to Wickes who usually have an offer on own brand 150mm, then do the whole job in one day, and leave the boarding until later. Two people doing the job MORE than cuts the time in half.

    Would 100mm kingspan (or equivalent), or as thick as will fit between joists, do the job to get equivalent insulation levels as rockwool, without the extra depth required for 270mm insulation? Or would there create a possible moisture problem?
  • You would have no moisture problem with THERMAFLEECE! Take a look at the website its worth a read. I've used it and highly recommend it if only from non itcheness on installation!

    Phone up the council planning dept about whether kingspan is aceptable or not, we put it in between the roof and plaster boards when doing a loft conversion but I'm not sure about where you want it and kingspan is megga money in comparison.

    There are also grants available from most councils to install insulation ask about that when you phone up.
