Could anyone tell me if the bigger dealerships will provide a hire car if you leave your own car in to be repaired? My partner's car just failed its MOT and needs quite a lot of repairs but he can't afford to miss work and has no other way to get there. It's a rural area and there are no buses. I'd appreciate hearing how other people cope with this. Do most people just pay to hire a car or take off work?

Its not just main dealers who provide courtesy cars.

I live in a rural area and the local garage provides a car, its a great way to boost trade.

Maybe give your local garages a call. I expect you will be paying half the price of a main dealer for repairs also.
  • If that fails and you're feeling stressed, go see the doc and get signed off. I know that sounds bad but if you're in the **** then you're in the **** and worrying and panicking will only make it worse so best to get signed off and chill. Just be sure your employer provides sick pay before doing so or you'll end up in the **** again.

    What a dumb idea.

You honestly think that they should go to the doctor and get some time off sick just because their car in in for an MOT? What a waste of the doctor's time, as well as the employer's.

Besides, they could be genuinely sick in the future and end up with an investigation.

When I used to commute by car then I'd book the MOT in far enough in advance so that I got a courtesy car for the day of the MOT which I'd keep if there were any problems that needed fixing.

Some garages have courtesy cars available at short notice but most dont.

Hire cars only really come in as an option when the garage or manufacturer have messed up badly and there are no courtesy cars available. My last car had a leak that killed the electrics and hydrolics and a £6k repair bill (VW paid it as a guesture of good will). 2 weeks later when it rained again the car leaked again and same death of electrics and hydrolics, this time the garage paid the repair bill and provided a hire car as it was rectification work - as were the following ~6 times it went back in for more leaks.
  • I used a indy mechanic and took the bus last time. You can use zipcar to make essential short trips.

OP said they live in a rural area with no buses. Really can't see there being a Zipcar on the doorstep.

Er the car failed it's MOT you numn nuts and is having repairs. It's not gone in for just an mot. For all you know the op can't get it repaired this month due to cash etc.

I did say it wasn't the greatest idea but it's workable depending on your circumstances. The op was asking for ideas weren't they?
  • oh wow, you were serious.
